I’ve never been a big player of videogames. There’s something about the need to act quickly that makes my mind and fingers freeze on the screen. It’s like when I watch peole play Lingo on televion. i am convinced that I would be unable to come up with a valid five-letter word having any letters I want in the limited time.
The kind of computer game I like is one where the experince of playing is the point. Mahjong where you get sounds and a click whne you pair tiles on the computer screen; solitaire card games (all kinds). I sometimes venture into things like Plinko on the Comcast webaite. Again, there is no urgent clock making me move fast to a decision.
For me, reading is the opposite. I sink into a good book and time just drifts away unitl it’s late and I’m turning hte page for one more chapter. What is it that you get lost in doing, and does it have a time limit? Or is it move at your own pace?
I wonder if people who like risky activities and adrenaline are more apt to go for activities where a clock can steal their rewards. And does this lead to different strategies in investment, shopping. cooking, and other daily life actitivies? Might there be a gene or predisposition to make everythin a competition, or is that something we learn as we grow up?
I’m going to have to think about this one.
